Interview of MPCJ 2018 Topper Ayushi Upadhyay

Judiciary Gold Faculty: Tell me about yourself

Ayushi: I cleared my 12th in 2013. Later I appeared for CLAT and got a seat in HNLU. I graduated from HNLU in 2018 and had few opportunities in corporate companies. I did internships in a corporate company and felt there was no job satisfaction. Later, after discussing it with my friend, I decided to pursue a career in Judiciary.

Judiciary Gold Faculty: Corporate companies offer a great salary and have different work environments. But what was the reason for choosing Judiciary as your career?

Ayushi: One of my seniors worked in a corporate company for 6 years and later wanted to change the domain. Another senior worked in a corporate company under a lot of pressure, which was why I got into the Judiciary field. I was pursuing my internship wherein I continuously travelled 2 hours on a local train for one week and got up early in the morning. Later it was getting late in the night as well. This pricked me as I was worried about my physical and mental health.

Judiciary Gold Faculty: Apart from Madhya Pradesh, were you targeting other Judiciaries?

Ayushi: I just targeted MPCJ because I wanted to stay with my family. I applied and focussed on clearing only Madhya Pradesh Judicial Services.

Judiciary Gold Faculty: How much time did you get for preparation right after your degree? What was your strategy to prepare for MPCJ?

Ayushi: I started my preparation in July, and the vacancies were announced in August. I wasn't aware of the MP Civil Judge's previous year's papers. I do not believe in luck as I believe in my hard work. The prelims exam was in February. Hence I had 8 months to prepare. Time doesn't matter in your preparation if you believe in hard work and dedication.

Judiciary Gold Faculty: What was your specific strategy for the preliminary exam?

Ayushi: I consulted many of my seniors, who suggested studying bare acts. I could finish studying all the subjects and bare acts by the end of December. From January, I prepared for prelims and revised all the topics. Revision is very important during MP Judiciary Exam Preparation. I never studied any new topic in the revision period. I planned my daily schedule. I didn't sit for 6-8 hours continuously to study the subject instead. I had planned to study the topics each day without postponing them.

Judiciary Gold Faculty: While writing answers for Civil Law and Criminal Law, was there any specific pattern you followed?

Ayushi: To be frank, I have very bad handwriting. Make sure to write the answer to the point. Don't just write unnecessary sentences which can fetch you no marks. I followed this strategy of writing to the point, which helped me score good marks. Also, there should be proper spacing between words and lines. Ensure that the answer script is legible.

It is important to understand the question and then write the answer. Follow the respective format of writing the answers.

Judiciary Gold Faculty: How did you prepare for the translation subject in the Mains exam?

Ayushi: I was good at translating Hindi to English, but I was facing issues while translating English to Hindi as I was unaware of Hindi terms. The most important thing to remember while preparing for Translation in Judiciary Exams is to be thorough with the Grammar. I began my preparation by studying words from the dictionary.

I spent one hour every day studying translation. I practised translating one-liners or paragraphs daily to enhance my preparation.

Preparation Tips for MP Judiciary Exam: A Strategy Inspired by Topper Ayushi Upadhyay

Succeeding in the MP Judiciary Exam requires a blend of hard work, strategic planning, and focused preparation. Inspired by the journey of Ayushi Upadhyay, a successful candidate of the MP Judicial Services 2018, here's a comprehensive plan tailored for aspirants aiming to follow in her footsteps:

  • Understand the Exam Pattern and Syllabus: Start by downloading the latest syllabus and exam pattern from the official MP Judiciary or a reliable educational website. Look at past papers to identify commonly tested areas. For example, if you notice a trend of certain topics appearing frequently, prioritize those in your study plan.

  • Start Early: Just like Ayushi, who began her prep immediately after her degree, you should start as early as possible. This gives you ample time not just for covering all topics, but for revisiting complex subjects and concepts. Starting early can also reduce last-minute stress and cramming.

  • Rely on Hard Work and Dedication: Remember, there are no shortcuts to success. Set a goal, such as studying a specific number of hours daily or covering a set number of topics each week. Consistency is key; even on days you don't feel like it, push yourself to study a little.

  • Consult Bare Acts and Focus on Revision: Bare acts are the building blocks for any law examination. Focus on understanding rather than memorizing them. Create summaries or charts to help recall important sections. Regular revision sessions can significantly improve retention. Set aside specific days or times for revising previously studied materials.

  • Plan Your Daily Schedule: Break your study time into blocks with short breaks in between to avoid burnout. For instance, study for 50 minutes, then take a 10-minute break. Use techniques like Pomodoro to keep track of time and stay focused.

  • Writing Strategy: Practice writing concise and to-the-point answers. Time yourself when writing practice essays or answers to improve speed and clarity. Review past top answers or model answers where available to understand what examiners are looking for. Good handwriting and clear spacing can make your answers more readable and leave a positive impression on the examiner.

  • Prepare for Translation: Improving your translation skills requires daily practice. Start with simple sentences and gradually move to complex legal paragraphs. Use a good Hindi-English (and vice versa) dictionary to familiarize yourself with legal terms. Watching news or reading articles in both languages can also help.

  • Utilize Available Resources: Enroll in a reputable coaching institute if possible, but also make use of free resources available online, such as lecture videos, practice tests, and legal blogs. Join study groups or forums where you can share knowledge and solve doubts with peers.

  • Mental and Physical Health: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial during exam prep. Include physical activities in your daily routine, eat a balanced diet, and ensure you get enough sleep. Yoga or meditation can help manage stress and improve concentration.

  • Stay Updated and Seek Guidance: Follow legal news, recent judgments, and amendments to stay updated. Subscribe to channels or platforms dedicated to judiciary exam preparation for insights, updates, and motivation. Don't hesitate to seek guidance from mentors or teachers when faced with doubts or challenges.
